It is an anthraquinone with a stimulant laxative effect similar to that of senna. It is obtained from cascara. Oral administration once or twice a day.
At the date of the last update, we found no published data on its excretion in breast milk.
Other similar anthraquinones, such as those from rhubarb and senna, are not excreted in breast milk and have not caused problems in nursing infants whose mothers took them.
Chronic use and abuse can cause problems (Joo 1998). Bulk-forming, osmotic, emollient, or lubricating laxatives are safer (FDA 2002). A balanced diet, rich in fiber, drink plenty of water and exercise are of paramount importance to fight constipation.
