A06AB??

Likely Compatibility

Fairly safe. Mild or unlikely adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Read Commentary.

It is an anthraquinone with a stimulant laxative effect similar to that of senna. It is obtained from cascara. Oral administration once or twice a day.

At the date of the last update, we found no published data on its excretion in breast milk.

Other similar anthraquinones, such as those from rhubarb and senna, are not excreted in breast milk and have not caused problems in nursing infants whose mothers took them.

Chronic use and abuse can cause problems (Joo 1998). Bulk-forming, osmotic, emollient, or lubricating laxatives are safer (FDA 2002). A balanced diet, rich in fiber, drink plenty of water and exercise are of paramount importance to fight constipation.

Alternatives

  • Liquid Paraffin (Fairly safe. Mild or unlikely adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Read Commentary.)

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
