Тиротропин Альфа

Limited compatibility

Unsafe. Moderate/severe adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Use safer alternative or discontinue breastfeeding from 5 to 7 T ½ . Read Commentary.

Recombinant glycoprotein analog of natural human thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). It is used in the diagnosis (with or without administration of radioactive iodine, 131I ) and in the treatment (with administration of 131I ) of well-differentiated thyroid cancer.

Since the last update we have not found published data on its excretion in breastmilk.

Its very high molecular weight make it highly unlikely that significant quantities will pass into breast milk. In case of maternal hypothyroidism with very high plasma levels of TSH, the amount of TSH found in milk was insignificant. (Robinson 1994)

Due to its protein nature, it deteriorates in the gastrointestinal tract, not being absorbed. Its null oral bioavailability makes it difficult for it to pass to the infant plasma from ingested breast milk, except in premature infants and in the immediate neonatal period in which there may be greater intestinal permeability.

Thyrotropin by itself is compatible with breastfeeding, but not if it is accompanied by the administration of Iodine-131.

Alternatives

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
