Polysaccharide extracted from plant cell walls (citrus, apple). Emulsifying, stabilising and absorbing properties. It is a gelling agent widely used in the food and bakery industry, in medicine and cosmetics. Used as an intestinal absorbent together with other compounds (kaolin) in the treatment of diarrhoea. Ingestion of pectin helps to maintain normal blood cholesterol levels and reduce postprandial hyperglycaemia (AESAN 2012). Oral administration.
At the date of the last update, we found no published data on its excretion in breast milk.
Its lack of bioavailability, which prevents intestinal absorption (Mahadevan 2006), together with its very high molecular weight, make excretion in breast milk impossible.
Considered as a prebiotic, it forms part of some commercial infant formulas. (Piemontese 2011, Magne 2008, Fanaro 2005)
Most gastroenteritis do not require medication, good hydration is sufficient.
A maximum daily amount of 10 g/day is acceptable from a safety point of view for use as a food supplement. (AESAN 2012)
