Adenosine monophosphate (AMP) is an endogenous adenine nucleotide, found in the body and in many foods of animal (meat) and plant (seeds) origin. Like adenosine, it occurs naturally in the body and is linked to the metabolism of ATP or adenosine triphosphate. It is involved in many biological processes. Nucleotides are used in food as a supplement, additive and flavouring that reduces the bitter taste of food. Nucleotides are found in breast milk and are added to breast-milk substitute formulas (Yang 2022, Green 2016, Pickering 1998). AMP is claimed to have vasodilatory properties and has been used, without evidence of efficacy, in venous insufficiency, haemorrhoids and varicose veins as well as in pain and inflammation.
At the time of the last update, we have found no published data on its excretion in breast milk.
Due to its protein nature, it is inactivated in the gastrointestinal tract and is not absorbed (oral bioavailability practically nil), which makes it difficult or impossible for it to pass into infant plasma from ingested breast milk.

Although they are devoid of toxicity and many European agencies do not consider a maximum amount of exogenous intake of nucleotides, the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition proposes a maximum daily intake of 0.45 g (7.5 mg/kg of body weight) as the sum total of Adenosine, Cytidine, Guanosine, Inosine and Uridine.
