Strychnos spireana

Incompatible

Very unsafe. Contraindicated. Use of an alternative or cessation of breastfeeding. Read the Commentary.

The dried seed of the Strychnos nux-vomica plant of the Loganiaceae family is used. It contains brucine and strychnine.
Traditionally used without scientific evidence to treat various digestive and cardiovascular disorders, depression, migraine and asthenia (Ma 2015, Palombo 2006, Blumenthal 1998, p355).

Since the last update we have not found published data on its excretion in breastmilk.

Highly toxic (neuroconvulsant) and easily lethal (Ma 2015, Mehta 2015, CDC-NIOSH 2005, Blumenthal 1998 p355).

It is not approved by Commission E of the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (Blumenthal 1998 p355).

This plant is on the list of plants whose sale to the public is prohibited in Spain due to its toxicity (MSC 2004). Strychnine is considered very toxic by several health agencies (CDC-NIOSH 2005, INSHT 2000).

Alternatives

We do not have alternatives for Strychnos spireana.

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
