Protamine

Likely Compatibility

Fairly safe. Mild or unlikely adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Read Commentary.

Protamine is a low molecular weight polypeptide consisting of a relatively small number of amino acids, mainly arginine (He2014). It is obtained from the sperm and testes of various species of salmon. It is used in the form of protamine sulfate or protamine hydrochloride. It is an antagonist of heparin, forming inactive complexes with it without anticoagulant effect. It is also used in insulin preparations to delay the effects of insulin. Intravenous administration.

At the date of the last update we found no published data on its excretion in breast milk.

Its high molecular weight (He2014) makes its passage into breast milk very unlikely.

Its low oral bioavailability makes it difficult to pass from ingested breast milk into infant plasma since, due to its protein nature (He2014), it is degraded in the gastrointestinal tract and is not absorbed.

Alternatives

We do not have alternatives for Protamine.

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
