Fondaparinux Sodium

Compatible

Safe product and/or breastfeeding is the best option.

It is a synthetic pentasaccharide anticoagulant that acts as a selective inhibitor of factor Xa. It is used in the management of venous thromboembolism, unstable angina and acute myocardial infarction. It is given by subcutaneous injection once daily.

Since the last update we have not found any published data on its excretion in breast milk.

Its pharmacokinetic data (elevated molecular weight and high percentage of plasma protein binding) make it highly unlikely that significant quantities will pass into breast milk.

Its null oral bioavailability makes it difficult for it to pass to the infant plasma from ingested breast milk (EMA 2007), except in premature infants and in the immediate neonatal period in which there may be greater intestinal permeability.

Several medical societies, experts and expert consensus, consider the use of this medication to be safe or very probably safe during breastfeeding.(Lactmed, Hale, Bates 2018, Briggs 2015, Schaefer 2015)

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
