It is a polyphenol present in some plants mostly fruits like chestnuts, walnuts, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, cherries, grapes, peaches, and pomegranates. Anti-oxidant properties are recognized. It has been used as photo protective agent in dermatological compounds.
Since the last update we have not found published data on its excretion in breastmilk.
It is a non-toxic product, found in many foods, so it is not expected to cause problems during lactation.
Its efficacy in treating or preventing cancer and chronic inflammatory diseases is under investigation (Rios 2018, Jaman 2018, Derosa 2016). Large, well-designed studies are needed to provide evidence for the efficacy of antioxidant supplementation in these conditions. (Block 2007)
We do not have alternatives for Ελλαγικό οξύ since it is relatively safe.
