They are specific antitoxic immunoglobulins that neutralize the Corynebacterium diphtheriae toxin. These are antibodies obtained from the serum of horses or other mammals hyperimmunized with diphtheria toxoid. It is used in the treatment of diphtheria. Single dose intravenous administration.
At the date of the last update, we found no published data on its excretion in breast milk.
The high molecular weight of the antibodies (Rothen 1942, Northrop 1942, Pappenheimer 1940) make it highly unlikely that significant quantities will pass into breast milk.
Due to its protein nature, it deteriorates in the gastrointestinal tract, not being absorbed. This low oral bioavailability minimizes the passage into plasma of the infant from ingested breast milk.
The possibility of breastfeeding during maternal diphtheria is conditioned by the severity of the disease.
