Dicumarol

Likely Compatibility

Fairly safe. Mild or unlikely adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Read Commentary.

Coumarin-type anticoagulant drug vitamin K antagonist with actions similar to those of warfarin that was used for the treatment and prophylaxis of thromboembolic disorders. It works by depressing the hepatic synthesis of vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors.

At the date of the last update we did not find any published data on its excretion in breast milk.

Its high percentage of protein binding make it highly unlikely that significant quantities will pass into breast milk.

No clinical or analytical (coagulation) problems were observed in 125 newborns of mothers treated with dicumarol during the postpartum period. (Brambel 1950)

American Academy of Pediatrics: medication usually compatible with breastfeeding.(AAP 2001)

Due to its unpredictable response and high incidence of gastrointestinal effects, it has been replaced by warfarin and is not marketed today.

Alternatives

  • Acenocoumarol (Safe product and/or breastfeeding is the best option.)
  • Warfarin (Safe product and/or breastfeeding is the best option.)

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
