Cartilage de Requin

Likely Compatibility

Fairly safe. Mild or unlikely adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Read Commentary.

It contains chondroitin sulfate, calcium, phosphorus and glucosamine.

There is not enough scientific evidence to support claims that it has beneficial effects on arthritis, psoriasis, macular degeneration or it can treat pain, inflammation, lack of appetite, or cancer (Basulto 2018, NIH 2017, nal 2007, Loprinzi 2005, Finkelstein 2005, Ostrander 2004).
Its use has possible side effects: nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, fatigue, dizziness, hypotension (NIH 2017).
It has pro-inflammatory properties that can worsen diseases such as arthritis or irritable bowel syndrome (Merly 2015).
Contaminants such as methylmercury and cyanobacterial toxin β-N-methylamino-l-alanine (BMAA) have been found in shark cartilage which is neurodegenerative (Mondo 2014) and is associated with Alzheimer's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Since the last update we have not found published data on its excretion in breastmilk.

Given the lack of proven indications to treat diseases and its frequent toxic contamination, its consumption is non-essential and even more so during breastfeeding.

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
