Camylofin Hydrochloride

Likely Compatibility

Fairly safe. Mild or unlikely adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Read Commentary.

A papaverine-atropinic drug with anticholinergic and smooth muscle spasmolytic effects. In some countries it is used to treat nephritic, hepatobiliary and intestinal colic, dysmenorrhea and in labor augmentation (Palshetkar 2020). It is erroneously indicated in headaches, odontalgias, arthralgias and nephritic colic that have nothing to do with smooth muscle spasms (Torres 2014, Zangronis 2006). There is also no good evidence that antispasmodics are useful during labor (Rohwer 2012). Oral, intramuscular and intravenous administration.

At the date of the last update we found no published data on its excretion in breast milk.

The scarcity of known pharmacokinetic data does not allow predicting its possible excretion in breast milk.

Product with very few bibliographic references and/or very old, marketed in very few countries.

It may cause drowsiness, obnubilation, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, dysuria, constipation, tachycardia or nervousness. (CECMED 2017)

An overdose of oral camilophine in 2 infants less than 1 month old produced symptoms similar to those of opioid intoxication that was reversed with naloxone. (Schvartsman 1988)

Pending further published data on this drug in relation to lactation, safer known alternatives may be preferable, especially during the neonatal period and in case of prematurity.

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
