Alfuzosin Hydrochloride

Limited compatibility

Unsafe. Moderate/severe adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Use safer alternative or discontinue breastfeeding from 5 to 7 T ½ . Read Commentary.

Alpha-1 adrenergic blocker that is used on benign prostatic hypertrophy and other problems like voiding difficulty and obstruction including those caused by lithiasis.

At latest update relevant published data on its excretion into breast milk were not found.

Because of a high protein-binding capacity it is unlikely an excretion into breastmilk in significant amounts.

Use not indicated on women. Several studies have reported usefulness for the removal of urinary stones. There is no evidence of efficacy in the prevention of post-traumatic urinary retention.

Since it may cause hypotension in the infant, until more data on this drug is available, a safer and known alternative may be preferable, especially in cases of nursing infants younger than one month of age and premature babies.

Alternatives

  • Oxybutynin (Fairly safe. Mild or unlikely adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Read Commentary.)
  • Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Fairly safe. Mild or unlikely adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Read Commentary.)

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
