Plant of the rosaceae family, endemic to the mountain forests of equatorial Africa. It contains docosanol, Phytosterols (beta-sitosterol), alkanols (tetracosanol), fatty acids (myristic, palmitic, linoleic, oleic, stearic, arachidic, behenic and lignoceric acids); sterols (sitosterone and daucosterol) and triterpenes (ursolic acid...). (Ndung'u 2024, WHO 2002)

The bark of the stem and root are used in traditional medicine for symptoms associated with benign prostate adenoma and the leaves and fruits for gastrointestinal disorders and rib pain. Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and hormonal (on androgens and estrogens) properties are attributed to it. There is a lack of firm scientific evidence for most of its properties and indications. Oral administration.

At the date of the last update we found no published data on its excretion in breast milk.

Devoid of toxicity, with few and mild side effects and no mutagenic or carcinogenic activity. (Ndung'u 2024, WHO 2002)

Given the lack of evidence on its therapeutic effectiveness in non-prostatic disorders and the possible hormonal effects attributed to it (EMA 2016, Jena 2016, Hartmann 1996, Mathé 1995), its use during breastfeeding is not advisable.

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
